A lovely 19th century miniature apprentice piece inlay tester in the form of a chest of drawers. Items such as this were often produced by apprentices learning the craft, and to a lesser extent as examples for travelling salesmen. Due to the amount of marquetry in different styles this example would certainly be for the former. The drawer faces have numerous types of veneer inlay in patterns typically used during the late 19th century, and this item likely dates around 1860-80. The quality overall is very good with the drawers fitting well. It is a true miniature chest being just 14.5cm wide, but it is large enough to serve as a small jelwellery box or similar. There are some pencil markings to the underside, although they do not help identify the maker.
Normal period wear with some usual scratches etc but no major faults. Facias good with one small piece of inlay to a chevron detected. Minor nibbles to the veneer edges. Some fading to the top and sides fom light exposure. Overall good for period and nicely original and not fiddled with.
