An early 20th Century flambe glaze art pottery vase. The backstamp is for Arthur Wilkinson, however it is possible this item was bought as a blank and used by an artist such as Edward Wilkes as the glaze more resembles his or Bernard Moore's work. The buying of blanks to decorate by artists was quite a common practice in the ceramics industry. The glaze is of a tonal red with some darker and lighter patches and it also has an unusual crystalline effect on the surface which is very hard to distinguish.
Some crazing which is heaviest around the top of the vase and the craze lines have blackened. Some scratches in the glaze not untypical for these soft flambe items. Minor nicks in the glaze around the foot which would appear to be from multiple firing.
