A Victorian walnut and maquetry inlaid workbox. It dates around 1860-80 and has a mother of pearl escutcheon and cartouche to the top. The interior has a lift out divided tray with an open area below. These items were used for sewing equipment and other household items for repairs etc, but they also make good jewellery boxes. It has a working lock with key and green felt to the base.
The interior has been re-lined using green paper in a fairly basic manner, it has some wear and the darker marks are likely glue show through. The exterior has scratches and indents in keeping with a well used period example, these are most noticeable around the escutcheon. Some fading to the back and left panel from light exposure, and some repairs at the hinge points to the back. Minor losses of veener and inlay at the edges and corners. Small loss of mother of pearl to escutcheon. Overall a well used, but not unattractive example, polished and ready for use.
