A lovely Art Deco period onyx box with a blue (perhaps sodalite or granite) band. It has a yellow metal mount of the Merchant Marine crown, so was likely owned or presented to someone in the Merchant Navy. There is no clasp mechanism, the lid stays shut by the weight of the lid. The hinge is gilt metal and has impressed marks - H.G & S Made in England. The mark is likely for Henry Griffith & Sons as it matches the mark they used on silver ware, and they were known to making cigarette, cigar and desk boxes in silver. The box itself could be used for cigarettes, jewellery or perhaps most suitably as a desk box where it would no doubt command attention. A fine looking piece.
Normal period wear, but no major scuffs or deep scratches. Two chips to the base, one small to the front, and a slighly larger one to the reverse, both shown in the images.
