A very attractive Victorian coromandel box dating circa 1860. It is of domed top form in the traditional treasure chest shape and is clad with decorative brass mounts. The mounts are further set with porcelain roundels which are painted with cherubin in the continental style and this is complimented by the pink interior giving this box a feminine touch. It is a good quality example with quality hinges and lock for the period. Set into the rim between the hinges is a small brass plaque which is etched 'Field late Stocken, 67 Regent Str.t' probably for the retailer of Regent Street, London.
The interior of the lid is finished in pink paper with gold stars, this is certainly of some age if not perhaps original. The box interior is lined with complimentary pink satin throughout. The base of the box has green felt to protect the surface it is placed on. At this size the box may have been intended for stationery of similar but of course you can use it however you wish.
The box has a working lock and comes with the key and a pink key tassel. A good quality example with extra interest from the porcelain plaques and would perhaps make a great gift for a lady.
Generally the box is very good for the period, it has been gently cleaned and polished with natural waxes to a mid sheen keeping the patina to both the wood and the brass mounts. The lock works perfectly. The pink satin interior is a recent re-lining. There are some minor veneer splits to the domed lid and sides but less than typical for the age. There are some minor losses to the decorative brass, but again quite minor and not making a significant impact to the look. Overall a nicely presented example ready to use or display.
