An interesting and very unusual small blusher or powder case in white metal with a black enamel finish by Marathon of the US. To the top is an inset cartouche which is engraved with the letter N, at two corners are decorative angle forms which have cut steel marcasite style decoration. The style and use of the cut steel suggests this item dates to the Art Deco period.
The case opens by sliding the lid upwards a little (with hinge on left) and then it pops open under spring loading. Inside is a mirror which appears to be polished chrome or similar (rather than glass). There is a reserve for blusher or powder and a lidded section, likely for a small puff. The compact is smaller than average and clearly meant as a very portable example which could be taken anywhere.
Embossed around the outside of the mirror is the word 'Slydacase' referencing the opening mechanism and likely some form of trade name, however I can't find a reference to this despite the manufacturers name (Marathon) also being present. Marathon were known for producing lighters and compacts during the Art Deco period, they also had a sliding mechanism for lighters. So perhaps this is something which did not take off or was produced in very small numbers compared to their normal pieces. It is certainly both very attractive and interesting.
Minor wear with some light surface scuffing the the back enamel. No powder nor puff present.
